Fluids are the least interesting part of owning a car and the part that decides how long you own it happily. Every one of them has a job, a service life, and a failure mode that costs far more than the fluid did.
Engine oil
Lubricates, cools and carries contaminants to the filter. It degrades with heat and time, not just distance, which is why an interval has a twelve-month component as well as a mileage one.
European engines specify oil by manufacturer approval rather than viscosity alone. In this climate we recommend 7,500 miles or twelve months, shorter than most schedules call for, because heat soak and short trips age oil faster than the calculation assumes.
Coolant
Does far more than stop the engine boiling. Its additive package protects the water pump seal, the aluminium in the head and the plastic components throughout the system. Those additives deplete on a schedule of their own, and depleted coolant quietly corrodes the system from inside.
Colour is not a specification. Mixing types can gel the whole system.
Brake fluid
The one nobody thinks about. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, drawing moisture from the air through hoses and reservoir over time. Wet fluid boils lower, and boiling fluid means a pedal that goes to the floor exactly when you need it not to.
It is time-based rather than mileage-based, roughly every two years, and humidity accelerates it. It is the single most skipped item on any European car we see.
Transmission fluid
Described as lifetime by most manufacturers, which means the life of the warranty rather than the life of the car. It shears with heat and stops holding the pressures the valve body expects. A service costs a fraction of a rebuild and is the most effective thing you can do for an automatic.
Power steering and differential fluids
Where fitted, both have service lives and both are routinely ignored until they announce themselves as noise. Neither is expensive to change and both are expensive to ignore.
Why checking is not the same as servicing
A fluid can be at the correct level and thoroughly finished. Level tells you nothing about condition, and condition is what matters. Colour, smell and contamination are what we actually look at, along with what the magnets in a transmission pan have collected.
